There is bad news for Telegram users. The Indian government has issued a stern notice to Telegram. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) has asked Telegram in March 2026 to immediately block thousands of piracy channels running on its platform.
This comes after complaints from OTT platforms like JioCinema, Amazon Prime Video and other content owners, who said that their movies, web series and copyrighted content were being openly leaked on Telegram channels.
What Exactly Happened?
The government has sent a notice under the Information Technology Act, 2000. In this, 3,142 Telegram channels have been identified which were sharing pirated content, movies, web series, TV shows, reality shows, audio stories etc.
Some channels had more than 2,000 pirated links, and 150+ channels had 500+ links. It has been said in the notice that these channels are violating the Copyright Act, 1957.
Telegram has been given only 3 hours after receiving the notice to remove the channels and their content and disable access. If not done, legal action may be taken, such as restrictions or penalties on the platform.
Why Did This Happen?
OTT platforms and content producers had lodged complaints stating that their content was being shared on Telegram for free and without permission resulting in significant financial losses for their businesses.
The government is now becoming strict against online piracy, and this action is a part of that. This notice came in early 2026, and is one of the biggest single platform piracy crackdowns.
What is Telegram’s Stance?
Till now there has been no official response from Telegram in public, but in such cases platforms have to comply quickly so that safe harbour protection under IT Act is not lost. If the channels are closed, many users will lose access to those piracy groups, who used to watch movies and series for free.
What Will Be the Impact?
- If Telegram complies with the directive, thousands of piracy channels will be shut down.
- Users will now have to turn to legal OTT apps or paid subscriptions.
- This move represents a significant step in the fight against piracy, serving to protect the rights of content creators.
This news shows that the government is taking online piracy very seriously. If you use Telegram, only view legal content. Piracy should be avoided, as legal action can be taken.
Let us know in the comments what do you think. Is this the right move, or has it gone too far? And if you used to use piracy channels, what is your plan now?
